Ye Xian: A Musical Retelling
The first recorded appearance of Ye Xian was in 酉阳杂俎 Miscellaneous Morsels from Youyang compiled by 段成式 Duan Chengshi. I find it fascinating that Ye Xian was written over a thousand years before it was published by Charles Perrault, and yet most people in North America only know the story of Cinderella; Ye Xian was released around 853 AD, which was during the time of the Tang Dynasty. Our musical adaptation of Ye Xian explores a Cinderella story as you've never seen it before. Is the step mother really evil or she just a single mother raising two daughter in a patriarchic world? Is the step sister ugly or is is impossible for her to meet the high standards the world has set for her? In adapting this fairytale we are focusing on the intricate nuances of family dynamics, friendship, and queer alterations to make this story relevant to today’s modern, forward-thinking world. This musical is being created in collaboration with Heeyun Park, with Heeyun as Music and Lyrics and Hilary Wheeler as Books and Lyrics. We have had the the privilege of developing this project with Bad Hats Theatre as a part of their New Bad Ideas Programs. We would like to thank the Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council for their support for this project.
The List
Do you keep a list of everyone you’ve ever slept with? Well I do, and I turned it into a choose-your-own-adventure interactive solo show. ’The List’ tells a collection of personal stories including–but not limited to–vengeful tinder exes stealing money, mediocre men with guitars, and narwhals. The audience is trying to determine tops and flops of the past lovers, and by crowning the top lover they will hopefully help me unlock the secret of how to best navigate this modern romantic landscape ruled by dating apps. The List is currently in development thanks to the support of the Canada Council of the Arts.
Wombmates
Our relationship with the world begins before we have even entered into to… or at least it does in this play. This story follows twin siblings Baby A and Baby B from the moment of conception, through their trials and tribulations as roommates confined to this womb room, to the final moment that they will inevitably cross the mysterious threshold of “THE VAG”. Wombmates is a campy, off-beat comedy that dives into the existential dread plaguing my generation while doubling the trouble. Wombmates began its development in PlayMe Podcast / Expect Theatre’s 2024 playwriting unit, and is in development thanks to the Canada Council of the Arts.
